Jamie Beeden: Visiting Lecturer

The White Stripes

Jamie Beeden is currently a self-employed freelance photographer, who uses istock.com to create an income. He has had 12 years of experience working as a freelance photographer, in which he mostly did music, portrait, fashion and commercial work. Some of his clients includedQ, NME, Nylon, Mojo, Spin, The Sunday Times, Time Out, Dazed & Confused, Esquire and Car. He was able to create contacts within the photography network whilst working with Rankin as his assistant for three years. His works includes a lot of travel, and he said it was a very competitive field to work in.

The advice he gave us about working with stock images and uploading photographs online, is to always put your file info on your images whilst in photoshop, so where ever the images are on the internet or if they are saved, your data will always be on it and traced back to you. When uploading images to stock, don’t expect an instant reward or payment, Jamie said that the process is long-term, and it’s good to upload a lot of images. When uploading images to stock  you need to consider aspects of copyright, so when taking images to go on stock sites, avoid logos or brands, as the images may not be accepted by the site. When using models for images always have model release forms to use, so that it avoids issues when images are uploaded.

The stock sites he suggested were:

  •  istock
  • stocksy
  • decisive images

Decisive images is an interesting stock page, as the sites concentrates more on nice looking images, rather than just simple images of lots of things, the images are unique and are a lot more artistic. I really like this aspect of this site, as it’s very different to most stock sites.
